Will the Philippine Television Networks ban ABC’s Desperate Housewives?

wites

This is probably late news but I think it is worth posting.

Recently, we heard from the news about the famous comment of one of the stars from ABC’s Desperate Housewives saying something like this.

“Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”

For me, this statement is really discriminatory and I’m not even a med student. We may not have the latest equipment or the latest technology or our education may be not at par when it comes to the medical profession or industry, but IMHO our Nurses (some Doctors) are sought after by so many countries abroad including the US.

We know that it’s a just part of a script to spice up the dialogue a little bit, but the management and staff of Desperate Housewives should have scrutinize the dialogue more before airing it on national tv. We know that it is fiction and should be humorous to some extent, but remember that what may be funny to them, may not necessarily be funny to us. With these cultural differences, they should have been sensitive enough with regards to statements that have racial undertones.

Now, there is a petition going around demanding for a apology from ABC and the management of Desperate Housewives. So far they have collected a total of 116553 signatures and the number is increasing everyday. So if you’re a Filipino and want to be counted, head over to www.petitiononline.com and sign the petition.

So let me leave you with some comments made by people that have already signed the petition.

Almie Pachoco - Although, it’s very obvious that such statement simply shows ignorance, this should not be tolerated. Besides, this show is not even worth my time because “Desperate Housewives” does not even sound like that of a true Filipino!

Nhilez - It’s sad to note that racial discrimination still perserves in our battle for equality. Yes, it may be true that there are issues which lead to the destruction of our preserved credibility and reputation. But consider also the fact, that you have your own issue as well. Don’t just try to focus on the issue that will generate a protest from the majority. Filipinos were born intelligent. They can prove their worth more than expectations. So please, to ABC, try to be sensitive and aware to what will benefit you most. We beg for public apology for the stain you’ve caused to the Filipinos especially to our medical practitioners. You’ve crossed beyond boundaries. Fix this issue. Filipinos are beyond compare. You can’t reach that far without us being part of your endeavor.

maria - carefully research before making such derogatory remarks. you do not know how may exams we have to take to get in the States and we have the highest no. of population serving the American people. We are hurt by your comments. My mother used to say” IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT SOMEBODY, DO NOT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL”
