What is the best antivirus software?
Recently, the boys from RSG had a discussion on what’s the best antivirus software available today. Some suggested that it’s the antivirus from Symantec because that’s what their company is using. While others said McAfee because that’s what he’s friend or colleague told him so and so on and so forth. All of these antivirus software vendors claimed that they are the best one way or the other. But what really is the best antivirus software?
The answer is simple. Does it matter? As you all know, by default, all antivirus software detects and prevents viruses. That’s their job and they are good at it. The only time antivirus software fails is when a user neglects the necessary action prompted by the software.
Look at this classic example.
You download some video over the internet using BitTorrent. You open the video then the antivirus software detects a virus. It prompts you, “Virus detected. Could not disinfect virus.†Then asks you again, “Delete file?†You are face with two option buttons, “Ok†or “Cancelâ€. Now what if you carelessly clicked “Cancel†because you are too eager to see the titillating video you just downloaded? Would your computer be infected? Of course, yes! Now would it matter if you have the best antivirus in the world?
As you can see, it really boils down to you as the user. If you’re not careful then your pc or laptop will still get infected. Actually, the pc that I’m using right now runs with a home edition antivirus and I haven’t had a virus for the last 4 years. So if you go for the pricey antivirus software, it’s really up to you. Just remember that no antivirus software will protect you if you don’t know how to use it properly.
Here’s a list of some antivirus software vendors.

Some of these vendors have a free version of their software. It may be 30-day trial version, or a home edition version which is usually completely free. Don’t worry they are as effective as their full-working version. The only difference is that some functionality may not work.
