Over the Rainbow
Once again I found myself surfing Youtube for music videos of artists singing their own version of my favorite songs. Since I’m not worrying about getting a sleep because I have to go to work later (which I won’t) because I’m on vacation leave, I’ll be doing a lot of net surfing today.
Anyway going back to the music videos I’ve been watching, I get a kick listening to some nice versions of Linger, Irreplaceable and even old songs like In his kiss and In the still of the night. In a way I get to critic the singers however not courageous enough to put it in the comment box.
Now that I know how to put some videos on my Friendster, I had Linger (original version - love it!) added to my media box. Though I reckon, I’ll be the only one who’s interested enough to watch it.
While I was browsing for other videos, I found something that made me curious who was singing the song. The song’s called Over the rainbow or Somewhere over the rainbow. I bet you know the song too since I’ve practically known it myself since I was a kid. I’ve heard the song from a couple of movies as part of their soundtrack like 50 first dates. I never really delve much before in figuring out who sang it (the version on 50 first dates, I mean) but somehow I got curious earlier. When I first checked out the video, I thought it was some sort of a tribute to someone who really didn’t matter (well, to me anyway). Then it slowly dawned on me that the big guy I was watching on the screen was the one who sang the beautiful song. The name of the person was Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. And yesterday, June 26, was his first death anniversary.
The original version is already beautiful as it is but because of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole rendition, he was able to have the song immortalized. Don’t you think that’s nice?
