I was already on my way out from Mandaluyong City Hall when i noticed a fleet of MEDIA vehicles inside the munisipyo. Being a dedicated iskupera(root word:scoop) myself, I wanted to make usyoso around, until i realized the danger of being seen on tv during office hours (I was on a 30-minute late lunch break honest hihi) Anyway, I found out later that the media circus was about Bong Alvarez hitting a Taxi Driver and ABS-CBN Reporter Gretchen Malalad.

Bong was arrested by Mandaluyong Police for mauling RENO Taxi Driver Wilfredo Cabanlit. According to police officials, Cabanlit sustained wounds and bruises after Alvarez allegedly hit him with a bottle and punched him.

Alvarez hailed a cab from Rembrandt Hotel in Quezon City initially asking Cabanlit to be brought to Pasig City. He then changed his mind and wanted to go to Quiapo via Shaw Blvd. Cabanlit decided to take Boni Ave to avoid traffic, but had not informed Alvarez because the latter had dozed off. Alvarez claimed that Cabanlit had tricked him while dozing off during the trip. According to Cabanlit, Alvarez reprimanded him when he woke up alleging that Cabanlit was trying to trick him.

Cabanlit asked Alvarez to alight from the Taxi after their argument. Then Alvarez kicked him and hit in the face with a bottle.

Later during the day, ABS-CBN Reporter Gretchen Malalad who was covering the news was also attacked by Bong Alvarez. Alvarez refused to be interviewed and threatened to break the video camera. During Malalad’s attempt to interview Cabanlit, Alvarez elbowed her in the face and neck, punched her in the forehead and pulled her hair. Malalad, a blackbelter, was able to hit Alvarez in the face though before Police officers separated them. Gretchen Malalad was a former Philippine Air Force Reservist, PBB Celebrity Housemate, Bb. Pilipinas 2002 contestant, South-East Asian Games Karate Gold-Medalist before joining ABS-CBN TV Patrol. Bong Alvarez was PBA’s Mr. Exciting and apparently is still living up to his name.
